And it's this person right here!
That's right, today (August 6th) marks the 25th anniversary of the release of Metroid for the NES. Back in 1986 at around this time, people were already starting to sink their teeth into the very original entry of the series, and maybe some really good players would have already discovered at the end that Samus was, in fact, a lady in a purple unitard.
Do I have anything planned for this little occasion? Nothing really, except for this blog post to make others aware of what's going on! However, I can parrot a lot of other features about Metroid's 25th that were released on other websites:
25th Anniversary Metroid Video on MDB: A video showing a whole whack of people from the video gaming industry and also general fans of the series reflecting on Metroid, saying happy anniversary, and also talking about how it influenced them, among small things. Definitely give it a watch if you're a Metroid fan! In addition, you can find it the Metroid Headquarters if it doesn't happen to work for some reason!
Harmony of a Hunter on Shinesparkers: This is a fan-made album of remixes from the Metroid series. They were doing a live broadcast of the album today, but it has since ended. However, you can download it at this link if you're interested in lending it your ears!
The Best of Metroid on IGN: An article that outlines IGN takes on their favourite entries in the series based on specific categories. Just a fun little article to check out and BEWARE OF SPOILERS if you haven't played the games yet!
In Honor of Metroid's 25th Anniversary on IGN: This is a video in which a violinist and a pianist have collaborated and made a truly amazing little musical tribute to the series. IGN asked them to do it spur of the moment, and for these two to come up with such a cool medley in such little time is really, really cool. Give it a listen!
There're four features for you to check out about this amazing series. I know Nintendo had plans for both Mario and Zelda's, 25th anniversaries...but it appears that the celebration of Metroid has either been lost amongst all the fuss of the other two series or is simply being kept under wraps. I sincerely hope that at least SOMETHING happens and that Nintendo acknowledges this milestone, but even if it doesn't, it's clear that there's a large enough fanbase out there that's devoted, capable, and talented enough to celebrate the series with creations of their own. As I'm sure all you readers know, it's definitely my favourite series...and I sincerely wish it a happy 25th anniversary, and hope for 25 more years of kicking space pirate ass, bombing random walls to find secrets, and searching out missile tanks!
